What is Transit Oriented Development? (TOD)

Transit Oriented Development means dense, mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods built around high-quality transit. When done right, TOD connects people to jobs, schools, and opportunity while reducing pollution and traffic. When done without community input, it drives up rents, pushes out longtime residents, and deepens inequality.

The Transit Equity Network believes TOD is only successful when the community benefits are real, measurable, and protected — affordable housing, living-wage jobs, local business growth, and public amenities that serve the people who already live there.
